Opening of en.vikidia ...[edit | edit source]

technically. Ready ! Vivi-1(fr)Bla ? 15:29, 24 February 2014 (CET)

Thanks for the good work, Vivi-1. A minor remark, looking at Special:Interwiki: I guess that "wikisource" should point to "en.wikisource.org". By the way, do we really want to be able to transclude from grundschulwiki and wikikids? NB: it's not a rhetoric question! I see even many more transclusion capabilities enabled on fr.vikidia which I didn't know about, just wonder why they are foreseen. Klipe (talk) 14:21, 25 February 2014 (CET)
I've modified the interwiki table - now it should work. Southparkfan 14:26, 25 February 2014 (CET)
@Klipe, sure we want to have interlanquage links to WikiKids.nl, our projects are very similar and they are our peers or counterpart in Dutch. grundschulwiki is a bit different (only school works) but we can keep in the interwiki table.
@Southparkfan :-). Astirmays (talk) 14:39, 25 February 2014 (CET)
Thanks/Bedankt Southparkfan !
@Astirmays, yes of course, but I'm referring specifically to the column "Transclude" in the interwiki table: as far as I can guess, it defines the external sources from which content can be included on this wiki using {{ }}. On Vikidia in English, this is currently enabled for Grundshulwiki, Wikikids and fr.vikidia. On Vikidia in French, it's even enabled for many more sources. Both seem strange to me. Klipe (talk) 15:11, 25 February 2014 (CET)
Ok, well, actually I never knew very precisely what was the difference between "Forward" and "Transclude"... I guess that "Forward" alouds that fr:en:Dog makes Dog (it can be useful sometimes). I think we don't use Transclude, should we disable it for every or most interwikis ? Astirmays (talk) 16:38, 25 February 2014 (CET)
I've tested the translude function. No really need in vikidia. Not sure it's used on WP too. Vivi-1(fr)Bla ? 17:31, 25 February 2014 (CET)

Portal Art[edit | edit source]

Could someone make a "Portal Art"? There are many articles about artists and works of art in our catalog. Thanks. SeeSpotRun (talk) 19:20, 25 February 2014 (CET)

Yes, me. Give me a moment, pls -- Comedia Paperback book black gal.svg 19:36, 25 February 2014 (CET)
I guess it should be Portal:Arts (plural), right? Klipe (talk) 18:17, 26 February 2014 (CET)
  • No. This portal is about sculpture, painting, etc. Pantomime, puppetry, and ballet are considered "arts" by some but this is not the place for them. SeeSpotRun (talk) 17:29, 27 February 2014 (CET)
+1 with Klipe. Rome2 (talk) 19:40, 26 February 2014 (CET)

Last minute changes for the 28th[edit | edit source]

Few things to be done (some by an admin) for a clean launching:

  • Could you copy the messages under the editing windows on the one on SEWP that starts as: "When you click "Save page", your edits will be made right away! (...) DO NOT SEND COPYRIGHTED WORK WITHOUT PERMISSION! (...) Any writing you send to Wikipedia is legally released under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License 3.0 GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). If you don't want your writing to be edited, erased, or copied by others, don't send it here."
  • and for the dev (sysops) may you display a site description that appears on the very top of the browser, (with the title of the page) like "the encyclopedia for children aged 8-13 years old that everybody can make better",
  • and may-be a few orther things... Astirmays (talk) 00:29, 27 February 2014 (CET)
All  Done. Southparkfan 16:48, 27 February 2014 (CET)
Thanks Southparkfan! Astirmays (talk) 19:57, 27 February 2014 (CET)

Should many infobox templates be created urgently ?[edit | edit source]

The article Damascus displays a kind of imported infobox with plenty of red link templates. Is it just an exceptional case with unfinished clean-up ? Or are those non-existing templates used on several other articles? In which case they should be created rather soon than later ! Klipe (talk) 10:32, 27 February 2014 (CET)

I checked: that's the only article that was trying to use the infobox settlement template. Also, the info contained in that infobox was basically not useful to a Vikikia article. Therefore, I removed the whole infobox and just kept the image. Klipe (talk) 12:02, 28 February 2014 (CET)

Portals[edit | edit source]

Could someone create Portals for "Sports", "Literature", and "Dramatic Arts". Thank you! SeeSpotRun (talk) 18:10, 27 February 2014 (CET)

An embryonic Portal:Literature exists now, as well as portal banners for {{Portal literature}} and {{Portal visual arts}}. Sorry, no time to do more right now... Klipe (talk) 22:41, 27 February 2014 (CET)
Thanks. SeeSpotRun (talk) 09:19, 28 February 2014 (CET)
  • The Portal:Literature is not embryonic anymore!
  • I notice that a Portal:Sport has been started. It should be improved, but also renamed into Portal:Sports (plural) which I don't have the right to do.
  • "Dramatic Arts"... Does this include theatre and films? what else?
  • I think that the portals should not be too much specific at this stage. For some time, it will be quite a challenge to maintain just a few of them! However, we probably need some additional ones to cover the basics. Proposal:
    • Portal:History — The page exists but is not ready as such yet.
    • Portal:Society — Covering cultures and traditions, languages, religions and mythology, philosophy, politics, economics...
    • Portal:Life — Covering Human body, health and medicine, biology, environment, plants and all forms of life. It would refer to Portal:Geography for climate and to Portal:Animals for animals.
    • Portal:Sciences and technology (or techniques?) — Covering all (natural and human) sciences not covered elsewhere and referring to other portals for geography, biology, economy etc.
What do you think? Klipe (talk) 11:40, 28 February 2014 (CET)

Done Portal:Society is made ; but there's not a lot of articles yet on it... {{Portal society}} -Fraf (talk) 15:29, 28 February 2014 (CET)

Could someone take a look at this page "Category:Portal:Animals/Linked pages" please? Something is majorly wrong. Let me know! Also I made the Portal:Sports. Could someone review it? SeeSpotRun (talk) 18:42, 28 February 2014 (CET)
That was an error introduced at the creation of {{Meta portal banner}}, which is used in all portal banners. I'm very sorry. The error is corrected. The category will however be fully OK only after some hours/days due to a bug in MediaWiki. Purging the cache for the category doesn't help. Note that any update of a page that's unduly present on that category page will remove it instantly and "null edit" (= just save the page without having changed anything and without edit summary) is enough to obtain that same result as well. I tried both on articles starting with letter "A" but don't have the time to "null edit" more than 100 articles now. Klipe (talk) 10:26, 1 March 2014 (CET)
Done I've finished correcting my mistake with manual edits or null edits. Klipe (talk) 11:46, 2 March 2014 (CET)

Main Page[edit | edit source]

Who likes the current Main Page? Who don't and have a new proposal? Southparkfan 20:40, 28 February 2014 (CET)

Yes, I like it![edit | edit source]

  1. I just think that "Image of the week" is better on the right side of the page. Galdrad (talk) 21:41, 28 February 2014 (CET)

No, I don't like it and I don't have a new proposal.[edit | edit source]

  1. The Main Page is hideous and uninviting. SeeSpotRun (talk) 10:05, 1 March 2014 (CET)

No, I don't like it but I have a new proposal.[edit | edit source]

  1. -- Comedia Paperback book black gal.svg 14:32, 1 March 2014 (CET) I preffer this one

Other comments[edit | edit source]

  1. The actual appearance of the current design depends too much on the browser. In the pas few days, I had the opportunity to connect from various systems and I noticed that most frames appear with plain white background in Internet Explorer 9 (on Windows 7 and Windows Vista) while they are colorful in Firefox (v.17 on Windows 7 and v.27 on Mac OS X 10.6) and Safari 5 and Opera 12 (Mac OS X 10.6). Whatever design is chosen, we should try to make it look good enough on most browsers. Klipe (talk) 16:32, 1 March 2014 (CET)
  2. I'm a creator of this main page and I think it look good and is very colorful for the childrens. Is not hideous. --Lolo7433 (talk)
