All rules and guidelines are based on five founding principles that define what Vikidia is.
Vikidia especially implements and complies with the articles 12, 13 and 17 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Encyclopedic approach
Vikidia is a French-language encyclopedic project intended for 8- to 13-year-olds. It is a website designed to bring together knowledge from a wide variety of fields (it is not a magazine, a blog, or a space for publishing personal opinions). The content of articles in the encyclopedia must therefore be verifiable. It must be appropriate for the 8–13 age group in terms of language and the presentation of information. Content generally considered inappropriate and potentially offensive to this age group is excluded.
Neutrality
Vikidia strives for a neutral point of view on every topic and an international approach. However, neutrality does not mean that all opinions should be automatically excluded. If there are differing views, they should be presented in proportion to their significance, along with the reasons behind them, so that they can be understood. For sensitive topics, this will be done by citing reliable sources and verifiable facts.
Freedom
Vikidia is free and open to everyone. Free means that no one has control over an article, not that anyone can write anything they want; the text can be reused; anyone can copy, modify, and distribute it without prior notice, in accordance with the terms of the CC BY-SA 3.0 and GNU licenses. Copies, whether modified or not, must retain the same license and credit the original authors. Vikidia is open to everyone, with no age restrictions. You can contribute anonymously or by creating a user account. Vikidia welcomes children's participation in its editing and encourages educational projects.
Courtesy
Vikidia follows rules of etiquette. All participants are asked to respect others, even when there is a disagreement, and to always remain polite and calm if tensions rise. Avoid pointless edit wars (when two participants repeatedly undo and redo the same text change). It is forbidden to use multiple accounts to harm the encyclopedia or cheat. There are many articles to work on and discuss. Be welcoming and friendly (especially toward newcomers) and assume contributors are acting in good faith unless there is clear evidence to the contrary.
Flexibility
Apart from the general principles outlined here, every rule can be edited. One of the advantages of editing Vikidia is that nothing has to be perfect the first time around. You don't need to know all the rules to contribute: if you make mistakes, other contributors will spot them and correct them. Don't worry about making mistakes either: all previous versions of articles are saved; if you accidentally delete information, it can be recovered.
