The raven perches on a bust of Pallas Athena, a symbol of wisdom meant to imply the narrator is a scholar. Illustration by Édouard Manet for Stéphane Mallarmé's translation, "Le Corbeau" (1875).

"The Raven" is a narrative poem by Edgar Allan Poe. It was first published in 1845. It had immediate and lasting success.

The poem is about a young man's descent into madness after the death of his beloved. A raven visits the young man at midnight, sits on a bust of Athena, and endlessly repeats, "Nevermore".
