Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer. He was born January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. He died on October 7, 1849 (aged 40) in Baltimore, Maryland. He married his cousin Virginia Eliza Clemm. They had no children.

Poe wrote a few mystery stories and science fiction stories, but his fame rests on horror tales such as "The Fall of the House of Usher", "The Masque of the Red Death", "The Black Cat", "The Tell-Tale Heart", and "The Pit and the Pendulum". His great poems include "The Raven" and "To Helen".
