The Grave of the Fireflies

This heartbreaking picture was taken after the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan in 19445. The photo shows the boy standing behind the body of his younger brother who died in the blast. The place where the boy was standing was a temporary cemetery outside the city where funerals were arranged for all those killed in the blast. The boy was standing there so his brother could be buried. The Grave of the Fireflies movie is based on this incident.

"I saw a ten-year-old boy walking. The boy had a baby on his back. It was very common for us then because the kids played on their backs with their younger siblings. But apart from this boy, the other kids I realized had shoes on their feet. No, his face was numb and serious, the child behind him was so sleepy that his head tilted a little, the boy stood there with his brother for five or ten minutes, a few men in white masks came to him Just then I realized that the child behind the boy was dead. মধ্যযুগীয় ইউরোপের দুর্গের সিঁড়িগুলো বেশ সরু করে বানানো হতো। সেই সাথে নিচ থেকে উপরের দিকে এগুলো ঘড়ির কাঁ/টার দিক বরাবর উঠে যেত। কেন জানেন? প্রতিপক্ষ তো অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রেই ডানহাতি হবে। তো সেই প্রতিপক্ষ যুদ্ধের সময় দুর্গে ওঠার জন্য যেন লড়াই করতে না পারে ঠিকমতো, তার হাতের অস্ত্র যেন ডানদিকে থাকা দেয়ালে বাধা পায়, সেজন্য এমন ডিজাইন করত তারা। ওদিকে উপরে দুর্গের যে সেনা থাকত, তার জন্য হতো উল্টোটা। তার যে হাতে অ**স্ত্র থাকত, সেই হাতের দিকটা ফাঁকা থাকায় তার কোনো সমস্যা হতো না, ঢালের দিকেও সে পেত বাড়তি সুবিধা। এর পাশাপাশি সিড়িগুলোতে সেভাবে আলো থাকত না, আকারও সমান হতো না বিভিন্ন ধাপের, যেন প্রতিপক্ষ ঢুকে অচেনা এই পরিবেশে খুব একটা সুবিধা করতে না পারে।
