Two sentences unclear[edit source]

I don't understand the meaning of these two sentences in the lead paragraph:

  • "For Japan, manga represents comics (Europe) or comics (United States)."
  • "His sense of reading which is the opposite of that of Western comics."
  • "Its reading direction is the opposite of the European comic strip." (rewritten)

It would be helpful to rewrite these sentences or even make them longer if necessary. - Deborahjay (talk) 08:01, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Here are my attempts to rewrite as I understand these points:
  • "For Japan, manga represents comics (Europe) or comics (United States)."
    • "Manga is a popular format especially for youth and young adult readers, similar to the European and American comics and comic books."
  • "Its reading direction is the opposite of the European comic strip."
    • "Text in the original Japanese versions is written vertically, from top to bottom."
(I don't know anything about the page layout of the Japanese language - are the comics bound left-to-right or right-to-left?) Is the point here that manga translated to Western languages has a different layout? That's obviously necessary in translation, so perhaps this point isn't necessary to mention. - Deborahjay (talk) 14:11, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
