London is the capital city of the United Kingdom. It is located in England and crossed by the Thames. Its area is about 1580 km2, and it has more than 7,700,000 inhabitants.

The name London is Celtic.

In the 1st century A.D., the Romans built a bridge there, and Londinium was their principal military base in Britain.

The merchants of the City played an essential political role in Tudor and Stuart times.

In 1665, the Great Plague decimated the population and in the following year the Great Fire of London destroyed four-fifths of the town. The town was reconstructed by Christopher Wren.

In 1940–1941, London was seriously damaged by German bombing raids, known as the Blitz.

The current mayor of London is Sadiq Khan. He was elected in 2016.

Sports[edit | edit source]

London has hosted the Olympic Games three times: in 1908, 1948 and 2012.

There are 6 football clubs in London. The most famous are Arsenal and Chelsea.

It is also in London that the Wimbledon tournament is held every year. It is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. It is one of the 4 Grand Slams (with Roland-Garros, the US Open, and the Australian Open).
