Jesse Jackson (born October 8, 1941, in South Carolina) is a Black American politician and Protestant pastor. He was active in movements for the recognition of civil rights.

He was the first African American to run in the Democratic Party primaries. In other words, in 1984 and 1988, he presented himself to be nominated as a candidate for the presidential election. Twenty years before Barack Obama was elected, he could have been the first black candidate.
