Ivanhoe is an historical novel by Sir Walter Scott. It was published in 1820. The story is set in 1194 and tells of a Saxon knight named Wilfred of Ivanhoe. Ivanhoe was hugely popular upon publication.
Ivanhoe defeats a Norman knight at a tournament, rescues the Lady Rowena from that knight's clutches, and defends a Jewish maiden from charges of witchcraft in the final scenes of the book.
It was adapted to an opera by Sir Arthur Sullivan, and a 1950s movie starring Robert Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Fontaine, and George Sanders. The book has also been adapted to television movies and serials.
