iTunes is a media player application developed by Apple Inc. The desktop application is available for free on OS X and Microsoft Windows. Most iTunes features are also available on iOS for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

The latest version of iTunes is 12.2, released on June 30, 2015.

The application was originally released with the name SoundJam MP in 1999. In 2000, Apple bought it from the original developers. It was then launched as iTunes 1.0 in 2001 by Apple.

In 2003, Apple added the iTunes Store in version 4.0. In 2015, a new service called Apple Music was launched in version 12.2.

Features[edit | edit source]

Users can play music, movies, TV shows, and podcasts. Through the built-in iTunes Store, users can buy music and buy or rent movies and TV shows. iOS apps can be bought and/or downloaded for later transfer to a device.
