Baffin Island, referred to as ᕿᑭᖅᑖᓗᒃ (Qikiqtaaluk) in Inuktitut is an island in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. It is the largest island in Canada and the fifth largest Island in the world, with an area of 507,451 km² (195,928 sq mi). It has a population of an estimated 13,731 people, including the capital city Iqaluit as of the year 2016. It is named after British explorer William Baffin. The Island is believed to have been inhabited for more than 1000 years, including by the Vikings.
