Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov (15 June 1914 – 9 February 1984) was the sixth leader of the Soviet Union from 1982 until his death in 1984.

Before becoming the leader, Andropov had various roles, including being the Soviet ambassador to Hungary during the suppression of the Hungarian Uprising in 1956. He also led the KGB, the Soviet intelligence agency, and influenced Soviet policies when Brezhnev was ill.
