Mary Anne Evans was a British writer, best known under her pen name George Eliot. She was born on 22 November 1819 at South Farm, Arbury Hall, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England. She died on 22 December 1880 (aged 61) at 4 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, London, England. She lived unwed with George Henry Lewes between 1854 and his death in 1878. She married John Cross in 1880. They had no children. Eliot's novels include The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (1871–72), and Daniel Deronda (1876).
