The New York City Ballet is an American ballet company founded in 1948 by choreographer George Balanchine and ballet scholar and commentator Lincoln Kirstein.
The company evolved from various ballet organizations in New York City. In 1948, it moved to the New York State Theater, now David H. Koch Theater. Balanchine and Jerome Robbins were named principal choreographers.
Its summer home is the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, in Saratoga Springs, New York. The company's training school is the School of American Ballet in New York City.
