VisualEditor

Hi,

We just installed VisualEditor on all Vikidia versions. It's a WYSIWYG editor that allows all contributors to change articles without having to deal with wikitext. You can try it by clicking on the Edit tab at the top of any article — the old editor is still reachable with the new Edit source tab. You won't see an Edit tab on this page because VisualEditor is only activated for articles. Would you deem it necessary, we could activate it for other namespaces in the future.

I've activated VisualEditor for everyone. I hope you'll pardon me for being that reckless, but the more opinions and problem reports, the better. You always have the possibility of deactivating VisualEditor in your account settings, tab Editing.

VisualEditor not being as tested as the good old wikitext editor, you may run into some bugs, though it is unlikely (this extension is activated on some major Wikipedia versions). In that case, please do tell your dear sysadmins! Happy editing, ~thilp^? 21:27, 4 February 2015 (CET)

Unfortunately we still don't have a centralized place where all Vikidians could simply report bugs and ask for technical improvements (we need SUL to do that properly, so soon but not tomorrow® because SUL is hard). Some ways of contacting us I can think of right now are, in decreasing order of efficiency: #vikidia, our user talk pages (no need to go on fr), the Vikidia:Contact email (especially for urgent and kind of private stuff), and your community talk page (so, here). Making some noise on fr.vikidia may also work, but I guess it's not a comfortable solution for most non-fr contributors. ~thilp^? 23:01, 4 February 2015 (CET)

Even without SUL, we could create a central "meta" wiki (e.g. meta.vikidia.org) that would handle cross-language things, like http://meta.wikimedia.org/ is for Wikimedia. Wynter (talk) 23:15, 4 February 2015 (CET)

Of course such a central wiki could be helpful in many cases, but for bug reports and feature requests specifically a true bugtracker (like Bugzilla) would be invaluable. We have some would-be, hand-made bug tracking system in fr.vikidia (using MediaWiki categories) but it's a real mess and only on fr. As soon as we have SUL, we can link Bugzilla (and meta.vikidia.org) to regular Vikidia accounts and everybody will be happy. \o/ ~thilp^? 16:51, 10 February 2015 (CET)

Also, could you also enable WikiEditor by default? This is the necessary code for LocalSettings.php:

There seem to be a slight problem with our WikiEditor setup (icons don't appear). I'm looking into it, and will make this editor the default for wikitext edits (i.e. VisualEditor will stay the default editor for the Edit tab, but I guess you also assumed that) as soon as it is solved. ~thilp^? 23:01, 4 February 2015 (CET)

Yes, that is what I assumed (WikiEditor for source edits, VisualEditor for WYSIWYG edits). Hmm, that's strange because before today the icons were showing up, although they had not shown up before last week. Thanks for looking into this. Wynter (talk) 23:15, 4 February 2015 (CET)
