Disambiguation: what is it?[edit | edit source]

Disambiguation is a word used to describe the process of making things clearer and more obvious. We use it in Vikidia to describe setting up a special page which lists links for articles which have very similar names, or which use the same word to refer to them, even if they're different. An example could be a word like "Drake". "Drake" is a singer and rapper, but it is also the word we use to refer to a male Duck. It's sometimes also used to refer to the English explorer Sir Francis Drake.

To make a disambiguation page.[edit | edit source]

You start by making the title of your new page, the thing which you're trying to make clearer - for example, you make a page called "Fish". At the top of the page, type disambig. Below that line, you can then start making the links you need to send other users to, so they find the thing they actually wanted. Have a look at this example of the code below, to see how this is done:

disambig

Drake (musician), a singer & rapper.

Drake, the proper term for a male duck

Francis Drake, an English explorer born in 1540.

This code shows the way we make the disambiguation page send people where they need to be.
