The Story of Babar is a picture book by Jean de Brunhoff. It was published in 1931, and was an immediate success. De Brunhoff wrote seven sequels, and his son carried on the series with many others.

Story[edit | edit source]

The story tells of a little elephant named Babar. The elephant learns the ways of civilized men, and is chosen King by his people. He marries his cousin Celeste, and founds the city of Celesteville. Babar wears a green suit, and all the elephants begin wearing Western dress.

Adaptations[edit | edit source]

Much merchandise has been generated around the Babar books that include toys, dolls, and other items. Babar is one of the most recognized children's characters in the world. Two animated television series and six movies have been produced and exhibited around the world.
