The Lord of the Rings is a book written by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien in 1956. It is an epic fantasy tale about an earlier time in a place called Middle Earth. Humans ("Men") live along with elves, dwarves, and magical beings. They take part in a struggle between Good and Evil that will determine the future of Middle Earth. The story involves a quest and finding allies to help on their way.

The book is a sequel to his children's book, The Hobbit (1937), and was published in three volumes:

These volumes were made into feature films in 2001, 2002, and 2003.
