Nighthawks is an oil on canvas painting by Edward Hopper. It was painted in 1942. It measures 84.1 cm × 152.4 cm (33 1⁄8 in × 60 in). It was sold to the Art Institute of Chicago for $3,000 within months of its completion. It has remained there ever since.
The painting is one of the most recognizable in American art. Fans have searched New York City's Greenwich Village for the location of the diner, but have failed to find anything significant.
