Manon is a tragic opera with music by Jules Massenet and words by Henri Meilhac and Philippe Gille. It is based on a 1731 novel by the Abbé Prévost. The opera was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 19 January 1884.
The story takes place in Paris in the 18th century. It is about an innocent young country girl who is seduced into a life of crime and debauchery by several villains. At the opera's end, she is sentenced to the penal colony of Louisiana, but dies of fatigue and sickness on the road to Le Havre.
