Former President Bolsonaro in 2022.

Jair Messias Bolsonaro (born March 21, 1955) was the 38th President of Brazil for 4 years, from January 1, 2019 to January 1, 2023.

For his statements on topics such as racism, sexism, homosexuality, the death penalty, torture and military dictatorship, he is classified at the extreme right of the political spectrum.

Jair Bolsonaro's ideas are often seen as conservative, populist, nationalist and are commonly associated with far-right politics. He is often compared to Donald Trump because of his ideas. He is regularly nicknamed the “Trump of the Tropics”. He is a vocal opponent of left-wing policies, including same-sex marriage, secularism, drug legalization, abortion, and environmental preservation. He is criticized for his positions towards women, homosexuals, blacks and indigenous peoples. He claims to be nostalgic for the military dictatorship (1964-1985).

Jair Bolsonaro was elected president of Brazil in October 2018, and took office in January 2022, succeeding Michel Temer. His period as president ended in December 2022, when he lost the election, being defeated by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
