The colours in web pages are coded with series of 6 hexadecimal figures (i.e. 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B C D E F), actually 3 pairs of figures. These pairs correspond to the intensity level of red (first pair), green (second pair) and blue (last pair).

Each pair of figures expresses a number from 0 (hexadecimal 00) to 255 (hexadecimal FF), i.e. 256 distinct values. In total, this system allows us to code a combination of 256 levels of red, 256 levels of green and 256 levels of blue: 256 * 256 * 256 = 16777216 (more than 16 millions!) distinct colours, from #000000 (black) to #FFFFFF (white). This notation is sometimes known as "HTML colour code".
