Fossils are the remains of animals or plants preserved in rocks.

Fossil of a fish

It can be a shell, a bone, a tooth, or plant matter such as seeds or leaves.

Science[edit | edit source]

The study of fossils is called paleontology. For example, it makes it possible to know animal species that have now disappeared, their evolution and therefore their relationship with current species (for example: the relationship of dinosaurs with crocodiles or birds).
