The Cook Islands (in Māori: Kūki 'Āirani) are a self-governing island country in the South Pacific Ocean in free association with New Zealand. All the islands, atolls, reefs and cays belonging to this State are divided into two chains: the Northern Cook Islands (which include 6 atolls and 1 reef), and the Southern Cook Islands (which include 9 atolls and a few other small land areas), which represent nearly 95% of the country's population and 90% of the land surface.

Rarotonga is the most populated of the atolls, located in the chain of the Southern Cook Islands, as it is home to the capital, Avarua, a city whose population accounts for almost 30% of the population of the country.
