Beauty and the Beast (French: La Belle et la Bête) is a 1946 black and white movie directed by Jean Cocteau. It stars Josette Day as Belle and Jean Marais as Beast. It is based on the fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont. The movie received rave reviews in the United States and has developed a cult following. The movie is noted for its lush fairy tale atmosphere and the sensitive and exquisite performances by Day and Marais.
