Franz Ferdinand (December 18, 1863 – June 28, 1914) was an Archduke of Austria. Before he died, he was next in line to be emperor of Austria-Hungary (a former country in central Europe). In 1914, he was assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a Serb. His assassination is considered the reason why World War I started.
