Alikhan Nurmukhameduly Bukeikhanov (Kazakh: Әлихан Нұрмұхамедұлы Бөкейхан; March 5, 1866 – September 27, 1937), was a Kazakh writer, political activist, and environmental scientist who served as Prime Minister of Alash Autonomy from 1917 to 1920. He became famous for defending the idea that Kazakhs should learn Russian culture at the same time that he thought it was necessary to preserve the Kazakh laws and own space.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Alikhan Bukeikhanov was born on March 5, 1866, in Tokraunskaya Volost. Bukeikhanov studied in Omsk, then in Saint Petersburg where he graduated from the faculty of economics in 1894. During his youth, he would have been influenced by socialist ideas. From 1895 to 1897 he was a teacher of mathematics in a school in Omsk. He is also interested in local culture and traditions. In 1905, he published a biography of the famous poet Abai Qunanbaiuly.
