The Åland Islands are 7,000 islands in the Baltic Sea and are a province of Finland. The population is about 25,000 and the area is about 580 square miles. They are important for military use. Most people who live there speak Swedish. In 1921 the league of Nations declared the islands to be self-governing but under the control of Finland. In 1951 the Soviet Union pressured Finland which ended with the Finns giving more rights to the islanders.
