Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) was the general who led the Union armies to victory over the Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861-1864). Grant later was elected the 18th president of the United States, serving two terms from 1869 to 1877. He was preceded by Andrew Johnson and was succeeded by Rutherford B. Hayes.
